What Google Uses to Rank Sites

Introduction

First let me say this - This knowledge isn’t new, The source of the information comes from 3 major sources: The Google Patent, Buzzle.com, and ecommercetimes. Overall by following these early points, you should be able to have a good start in developing your site.

10 key Tips to be found

  1. Length of domain Registration - If you have only registered your domain for 1 year then google may think that you are a spammer, and/or ignore your site. Plus it just makes life easier to register a domain for multiple year, and not have to deal with it for a long time.

  2. Links - Google uses inbound links to form an opinion on your site. But if you gain “to many at once” you will be considered a spammer.

  3. List sites in the various google services, such as webmasters listing, Sitemap submit, and Local Business Center

  4. Quality Content - E.g. if you have fish 6 times on your page, and in the metatags, and your competition has fish only 3 times, you should list higher.

  5. Page Titles - A site needs quality page titles. This needs to be descriptive for both search engines, and people to want to click through to the site.

  6. Meta Descriptions - This is a summary of what the page contains. It again shows on google results, and tells spiders what the page contains.

  7. Keyword tags - Google doesn’t seem to use these to form search results, but as far as we know other search engines do. So they are good to have, but not essential. If you do use keywords, make them unique to the page.

  8. Have quality outbound links - You want quality inbound links, but you should also should have quality outbound links.

  9. Alt Tags - Images can’t really be interpreted by search bots, so you need alt tags to provide a description of the images.

  10. Update - You need to update your site regularly to show that content is still active.

Thoughts

Overall this isn’t that difficult. Some of the knowledge is quite common, but we have seen a lot of talk about having 100 different domain names pointing to your site. But really this isn’t needed.

Take for example some SEO work we did on Acratech.
